How to cool a hot Pentium 4 processor for a Dell Inspiron 9100?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop which I bought of a mate. It runs very hot!! I’ve taken it apart, got rid of loads of dust/fluff from the fans and air channels and it has helped loads but its still running hot (about 60 on idle, and 70 under load). I’ve installed I8kfan to get more control of the cooling fans but still no real help.

I’ve just read in a forum somewhere that some guy had the same problem and that he had a Prescott P4 processor. He took it out and replaced it with a Northwood processor and it almost halfed the operating temp. My question is how can I tell a Northwood from a Prescott processor?

I’m afraid no Pentium 4 processors are suitable for laptops, they are just to power hungry.

It’s the reason the Pentium 4 got dropped. Instead they went back to the Pentium III design and tweaked it to create the Pentium M, core duo was then based on the Pentium M.

The Pentium III 1.4Ghz for exaple was faster than the Pentium 4 1.8Ghz that replaced it and consumed half the electric and so generated less heat. This is why the Core Duo Processors has lower Ghz, but were still faster than the Pentium 4 and used less electricity.

For example :
A Mobile Prescott has a TDP of 88W
A Mobile Northwood has a TDP of 70W
A Pentium M (faster than the P4) has a TDP <27W
A standard Core 2 Duo has a TDP of 35W
A P Core 2 Duo has a TDP of 25W

As for indentifying the processor, on the top the is a 5 digit SSpec code.

If it is:

SL7X5
SL7DU
SL7DT
SL7DS

It's a prescott.

There are 2 Pentium M's which may be compatible with your laptop, the SL7S9 and SL7SL. While there are many Pentium M's those are the only Socket 478 models (Prescott/ Northwood are also Socket 478) that's assuming motherboard will support them.
